John Cleaveland was born on April 11, 1722, in Canterbury, Connecticut. He entered Yale College in 1741 and quickly became involved in the revivalist atmosphere in New Haven. In 1744, he was accused of attended Separatist meetings and was eventually expelled as a result. He would not receive a Yale diploma until 1763. After leaving Yale, he studied theology with the Rev. Philemon Robbins and in September 1745, became pastor of a New Light church in Boston, Massachusetts. He later became the past...
